The study of how humans acquire language begins with the study of child language acquisition. Principally, two hypotheses have been put forth. The first, deriving from the structuralist school of linguistics, holds that children learn language through imitation and positive-negative reinforcement. This is known as the behaviourist approach. The second, or innateness hypothesis, proposes that the ability to acquire language is a biologically innate capacity. This is known as the cognitive approach. Furthermore, innate language learning ability is linked to physiological maturation and may atrophy around the time of puberty. The innateness hypothesis derives from the generative/transformational school of linguistics. Such descriptions of language acquisition are further tested in exploring how adults acquire language. It appears that most adults learn language through memorization and positive-negative reinforcement: a manifestation of the behaviourist model. Whether this is a result of the post-pubescent decay of the innate ability described above or a result of other psychological and cultural factors is a question of great interest to the psycholinguist.

People who are into body building have one goal in mind – to become the biggest, most muscular people in the world. To accomplish this, they will do almost anything to gain muscle. For most, this means hours of grind and toil at the gym. Given time and effort, these dedicated individuals become champions who gain the respect and envy of an admiring world. Unfortunately, there are those who want instant results and are willing to do anything to shortcut the time-honoured process. Many people are tempted to use steroids, because they promise quick muscle gain. While taking large doses of these magical potions, you can actually see your gains come almost daily – and this is how you get hooked. After a few weeks of incredible gain, you now try to give up steroids, but soon start to see your muscle gain fade away. After a few weeks, you go back to the bottle to regain your beloved muscle mass. This is the first sign that the steroids are affecting your mind. They tell you that you can’t be without them, and that if you take more you can get even bigger. As doses increase, you become a different person, both physically and mentally. You probably won’t even notice that you are going through what has been called the ‘roid rage’ since you will be too occupied with building up mass. But others will see, even experience, your personality changes. Roid rages were previously thought to be an outward sign of the extreme joy associated with dynamic muscle growth. In the past decade academics have been involved in investigating differences between men and women. Researchers have been especially interested in discovering what women can do better than men. As far as language is concerned, studies show that girls begin talking before boys and are capable of producing more varied and sophisticated sentences. In addition to having a better command of the language, women also appear to have better social skills and are more likely to be complimentary than men. Another area that has been investigated is how men and women lead. Women try to share power and make their employees feel more worthwhile. Men, on the other hand, like to demonstrate their authority more formally and seem to care more about hierarchy. However, it is worth remembering that study results reflect averages, and there will always be exceptions.
