“Birds spend most of their time looking for food. Some birds, like owls and eagles, are carnivores. Some birds, like the hummingbird, grouse, and Canada goose, are mostly herbivores. Other birds, like starlings, are omnivores. Birds mostly use their keen eyesight to find food. Some amazing hunters, like eagles, have eyesight that is five to six times sharper than a person’s. They can spot a small prey from a mile away. They use their beak and their claws to get bugs, worms, small mammals, fish, fruit, grain or nectar. Some birds, like the tiny, nectar-eating hummingbird, are important pollinaters of some flowering plants.”

The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality. As scientific research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless killing machines is beginning to fade. Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, fully one-third to one-half are attributable to great whites. However, most of these are not fatal, and new research finds that great whites, who are naturally curious, are 'sample biting' then releasing their victims rather than preying on humans. It's not a terribly comforting distinction, but it does indicate that human are not actually on the great white's menu. Great whites are the largest predatory fish on Earth. Mine-clearing efforts made more progress last year than ever before. But there is concern about future progress because international support decreased for the first time. The European Commission, the United States and eight other major donors decreased their financing of 'mine action,' which is defined as clearing mines and destroying supplies of them. It also includes mine risk education and survivor assistance. Seven hundred forty square kilometers, an area about the size of New York City, was cleared of mines last year. It is the most land cleared in one year since modern de-mining efforts started in nineteen eighty. Yet the number of reported casualties from landmine explosions was eleven percent higher than in the previous year. Landmines killed at least two thousand people and wounded more than five thousand others last year. About eighty percent of the victims were civilians. What is more, numbers of reported casualties are often less than half of the real number. More than one hundred fifty governments have joined the Mine Ban Treaty, banning the use, production and trade of landmines. Twenty-nine still have to finish mine-clearing within the next few years. But thirteen might not meet that goal.
We learn from the passage that the concern about mine-clearing ----.

The major sciences of the Hellenistic Age were
astronomy, mathematics, geography, medicine, and
physics. The most renowned of the early Hellenistic
astronomers was Aristarchus of Samos (310-230
B.C.), sometimes called the “Hellenistic Copernicus.”
His primary accomplishment was his deduction that
the Earth and the other planets revolve around the
Sun. This view was not accepted by his successors
because it conflicted with the teachings of Aristotle
and also with the Greek conviction that humanity, and
therefore the Earth, must be at the centre of the
universe. Later, in the second century A.D.,
Aristarchus’s fame was overshadowed by that of
Ptolemy of
original discoveries, he systematized the works of
others. His principal writing, The Almagest, based on
the view that all heavenly bodies revolve around the
Earth, was handed down to medieval
classic summary of ancient astronomy.

“Historian Andrew Lambert went on a modern day voyage to Australia, on a replica of Captain Cook’s ship Endeavour. Although those who served on the ship found some elements of this image convincing, they recognised that they should not allow their delicate 21st century sensibilities to cloud their judgement. Their first contact with the alternative world of Captain Cook was the food. A diet of salt meat, hard biscuit and sauerkraut was a shock to them, but their predecessors would have considered it superior to anything available on shore. Every ship’s captain would have ensured the crew was well fed, and kept their dinner time sacred, usually allowing the men 90 minutes to deal with their tough rations. They would only be called from the mess table in an emergency .

We can only guess when Shakespeare wrote his plays. Hem may have had his own writing 'season' perhaps in the quieter winter months, but he never stopped acting probably taking two or three minor parts instead of a major one. He seems to have chosen for himself the more static and undemanding roles in his plays, such as old Adam in As You Like It and the Ghost in Hamlet. His audiences included many habitual playgoers, and many must have known Shakespeare and he must have known them. We can imagine, as a recent biographer has said, 'that there might have been a complex, subtle communicative exchange with he appeared in one of his own plays'. In spring 1613, he purchased his first property in London. He was renting it out by 1616, but may originally have entertained other intentions for the property. It would certainly have been a handy place to stay, being near the Globe, which was his theatre. Perhaps the destruction of the Globe in 1613, which probably prompted him to sell his share in the theatre company, altered his plans for it. He may not have given up acting, but his writing career was over by the end of that year. In 1614, he returned to his hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon, and died there in 1616.
It is suggested in the passage that, when Shakespeare acted, ----.

E) the parts he played were mostly easy, unimportant ones

Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary field that has arisen during the past decade at the intersection of a number of existing disciplines, including psychology, linguistics, computer science, philosophy, and physiology. The shared interest that has produced this coalition is understanding the nature of the mind. This quest is an old one, dating back to antiquity in the case of philosophy, but new ideas are emerging from the fresh approach of Cognitive Science. Previously, each discipline sought to understand the mind from its own perspective, benefiting little from progress in other fields because of different methods employed. With the advent of Cognitive Science, however, common interests and theoretical ideas have overcome methodological differences, and interdisciplinary interaction has become the hallmark of this field.
